Biospheres now showing at Philadelphia art gallery Hot Bed

From March 20 through May 8, 2021, art lovers can reserve an appointment to see “Biospheres” at HOT•BED, a gallery in Center City, Philadelphia where art and design meets horticulture.

This collaborative exhibition, curated by James Oliver Gallery, features visual artists Marguerita Hagan and Ana Vizcarra Rankin.

From Hagan’s new “Flora” sculpture series to Rankin’s macroscopic visualizations of land, sea, and stars, and every work of art in between, “Biospheres” seeks to inspire viewers with intimate looks at the ecosystems that make up our world as we know it.

Earth’s survival is dependent on biodiversity, and both artists feel strongly that our environment requires our honor and attention, now more than ever.

Marguerita Hagan shows onlookers one of her newest creations titled “Life,” one of three pieces in her “Flora Shield Trio.”

Hagan’s “Blue Crab Shield” is a wall hung cluster of detailed ceramic crab claws.

This piece by Hagan, titled “Diatom Dance,” gives viewers a look into asexual reproduction of a diatom.

A look inside Hagan’s interactive piece titled “Total Solar Eclipse Homage” allows viewers to experience an eclipse simulation.

Artist Ana Vizcarra Rankin described her creative process to those in attendance on opening night.

The ceramic sculpture “Light,” one of Hagan’s “Flora Shield Trio,” provides an amplified look at the magic of a photosynthesis process that is constantly taking place throughout our planet.

Rankin created this piece after practicing the art of naked-eye star gazing, which is the study of the night sky without the assistance of any sort of lens or telescope.

This close up of Rankin’s work provides a layered view of the intricacies in texture she’s able to incorporate into large-scale world maps.

Coffee beans form the heart of Rankin’s piece titled “Uranium.”

Using ceramic, Hagan crafts a detailed copy of a sea anemone.

Hagan’s “Wildlife Shield” amplifies the tiny characteristics of animals in an environment that requires the protection and honor that shields often symbolize.
