Delco residents protest murders of black Americans by police

On April 14, Delaware County residents gathered at the corner of State Road and Lansdowne Avenue in Upper Darby to protest the ongoing murders of black Americans committed by police officers.

This sidewalk rally was organized by the community groups UDTJ and Delco Resists after Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old black man, was killed by a Minnesota police officer at a traffic stop just days before on April 11. The officer claims she mistook her gun for her taser.

Both community groups, which were formed last year after the murder of George Floyd by former police officer Derek Chauvin, seek to fight systemic racism, achieve protection for the many black persons victimized by police brutality by promoting police reform, and obtain justice for the black lives that continue to be injured or killed at the hands of police.

More than a dozen community members assembled at the event, shouting into bull horns the long list of names of slain black Americans who were victims of police brutality, and waving “Black Lives Matter” flags high in the night sky.
